Dolphin Trail

12th to 14th July 2019

Our Dolphin Trail Photographic Experience follows the remarkable North Sea population of Bottlenose Dolphins. These amazing animals are the largest Bottlenose Dolphins in the World because living in the cold North Sea requires a lot of blubber to keep warm! Although we will travel 150 miles up the east coast of Scotland on our trail, it will be the same population of Dolphins we are meeting. This is one community of Bottlenose Dolphins, spread over a vast area of coastal sea.

We begin our Dolphin Trail with a visit to Aberdeen Harbour, where we will take a trip out on a boat to meet the Dolphins. We will also spend time at the Harbour entrance, where the Dolphins often breach in spectacular displays and frequently bow-ride the ships as they enter and leave the harbour.

After a night in a comfortable hotel, we will travel up the coast to the WDC Dolphin Watch centre at Spey Bay, where the River Spey (which supplies the water for many of Scotland's famous whiskies) empties into the Moray Firth. Otters, Grey and Common Seals, seabirds and occasionally Ospreys can also be found around this area.

From Spey Bay, we continue along the coast and cross the bridge from Inverness to the Black Isle, where we will spend time at Chanonry Point. Here there is a unique tidal situation around the point, which channels the Salmon and other fish close to the shore and here the Dolphins hunt those fish. It is not uncommon to find the Dolphins so close to the shore that you can hear their conversations!

From Chanonry Point, we head back to Inverness for the night. On our third day we have another visit to Chanonry Point and head along the coast to Cromarty, where we take a trip out on a powerful rib and let the Dolphins come to us. Dolphins often come very close to the rib and sometimes even nudge it playfully!
